Mostly posting this for the benefit of Erm as a follow up to a conversation we had last night, but I thought some others might be interested in it as well.

If you were at our last Dynamis - Valkurm run you know it was less then stellar.  After getting messed up by Fairy Ring we made good time trekking over to Nant'ina and back to the Mega Boss, only to have Extremely Bad Breath go off and ruin our day.  After reviewing the logs for that night it turns out that EBB was just a fluke - Hermod and Somajan were spamming chainspell stun, and the chainspells were staggered but overlapped, but EBB just managed to sneak in after a short lasting stun (I have the full log of the fight if anyone would like to take a look).  So it appears this part of the run was just a fluke - you can do everything right and still lose.

We also discussed skipping Fairy Ring entirely in the future.  The last 2-3 Valk runs he's done a good job at messing up the group, and in the last run completely wiping us.  Based on some other groups experiences (http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/80998-fairy-ring-dmg-dealt.html if you're up for some reading) seems that skipping him won't cause much of a problem with a good Chainspell-Stun rotation and our usual zerg tactic on CC.  Alternatively, if we'd rather stick to the old tried-and-true method that we've bee going with, I will set up a stun rotation for Fairy Ring.  With a couple BLMs, RDM/DRK, and DRK/whatever we should have enough ppl to keep him stun locked if we actually stagger and go in order.

If we did skip Fairy Ring and wiped to the boss we should still have about 30 minutes left in the zone - BLMs could tractor everyone away from the mega boss, recover and pull a few nightmare mobs as a consolation prize for our trouble until we ran out of time.

Please discuss, I'd like to know what other people think.

Fairy Ring doesn't stop EBB - nothing does (well, Chainspell-Stun, but that hopefully stops everything).  Fairy Ring stops Miasmic Breath (Cone DMG - reportedly around 500 if it goes off) and removes enhanced movement speed (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Cirrate_Christelle).

was the issue in this run the time?

sounds to me that the issue was the actual fight.

1) you had problem killing the boss when fairy ring was down, why try when fairy ring buff is still on?

2) stun rota if done correctly is effective in both situation, so again why try?

3) you will have to either kill the adds before wipe or wait for their respawn or you will aggro them and boss will link...not sure how long that takes...so again...why try?

at least that's my opinion, sounds to me like : we couldn't do it easy mode so we going to try the hard mode.

Good luck in any case guys.

To expand/provide more details:

There are a couple of issues that happened.  In the last Dyna-Valk EBB went off - based on reading the logs this was a fluke.  Both Herm and Soma were Chainspell Stunning (Herm went first and Soma started ~20-25 seconds later.  Both were stunning every 3-4s based on log timestamps.  EBB just managed to fit in between).

That same run, we also wiped to Fairy Ring.  The 2 Valk's before that I remember nearly wiping or at least taking heavy losses to Fairy Ring.  If he can be skipped while still killing the mega boss w/o too many issues, we just have more farm time on our hands.  If we choose to continue to do Fairy Ring I don't have a problem with that - but we should attempt to modify our strategy on him to make him easier to deal with.

After the wipe the boss and pets returned to the bosses starting position (with all the dead DD underneath them).  Last run I was able to RR where the BLMs hang out (west of boss, by the trees) w/o a problem.  If the mages get up and tractor the DD to safety, we could get up and make a few Nightmare mob pulls - this would be tricky due to the small space with all the aggro around, but should be very doable.

In previous LSs I've been in they've also used a CS stun on Fairy Ring.  That could be an option or if you have enough stunners just do a quick moving stun order.

Don't forget that hasting a BLM can be helpful in situations where stun is critical.  Back when I did sky I used to haste BLMs as well so they could stun more on gods.

Tested last run, if stun is done right no need for Fairy Ring.
